On February 27, in collaboration with the Collegio Universitario Don Nicola Mazza, LUSDA organizes a Thematic Workshop on the topic of Papal Diplomacy with a panel of three distinguished speakers:
• Amb. Alexandra Valkenburg, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Holy See, Order of Malta, UN Organisations in Rome and to the Republic of San Marino.
• Amb. Pasquale Ferrara, General Director for Political Affairs and International Security at the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale and Professor at Luiss Guido Carli University.
• Msgr. Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Oriental Churches.
The Holy See has long been recognized as a subject of international law and as an active participant in international relations. Engaging with other sovereign states and international organizations, it has crafted a unique system of diplomatic engagement that is arguably one of the oldest in existence. A distinctive feature of this Holy See’s “Papal Diplomacy” is its functioning as an instrument not only of a state, however small, but also of a centuries-old religious institution: the Catholic Church. This has generated throughout the centuries a hybrid mode of agency merging the religious and the political, and famous for its dedication to a number of issues of the spiritual, moral and humanitarian orders.
Registration for in-person participation is no longer possible. If interested in joining virtually, please register here: https://lnkd.in/dN5JZvu2
